This limestone cliff is unique. The rock face was sanded smooth at the end of the Wisconscin ice age 12,800 years ago, by a massive temporary river that carried a lot of sand in it. Looking east, As the flow rate slowed down, the river deposited a lot of sand here, forming the ridge the road is built on, and the sand pits to the west, shown in the satellite photos. This also occured at the south end of Knowlton Lake at the same time. by Steve Manders

Layers of Bobcaygeon limestone from the mid-Ordovican perion 455 million years ago clearly show different layers of dense uniform limestone, shale and volcanic ash. It has lain flat and undisturbed for almost 3 times the age of the Atlantic Ocean and Rocky Mountains. by Steve Manders
