McBurney Park also known as Skeleton Park. About 10,000 people who died of plagues between 1813 and 1865 were quickly burried here. Kingston did not have any municipal water until 1850. Most houses had shallow wells beside their out houses, or bought wagon loads of contaminated water which was kept in basement cisterns which also gathered rain water. Germs were not understood yet. Acts of God were usually blamed. by Steve Manders

This monument commorates 10,000 people, mostly Scottish and Irish immigrants, that died of plagues from 1813 to 1865 and were burried in mass graves in this park. That would have been half of Kingston's population then. The inscription at the bottom is in Gallic. Kingston began the distribution of municipal water from Lake Ontario in 1849 to eliminate plagues caused by using outhouses and shallow wells. by Steve Manders
