Cemetery in St Andrews West by pegase1972

St.Andrews Parish Cemetary ground founded in 1784 has a Celtic style stone wall. Resting in here is the great explorer Simon Fraser, and the first Prime Minister of Ontario, John S. McDonald. (not Sir John A. McDonald, Canada's first Prime Minister who is burried in Kingston). Other Celtic stone walls can also be found on Amherst Island west of Kingston. Every one is unique in how it was constructed and finished. by Steve Manders

The oldest stone building in Ontario built as a church and served the congregration until the larger church was built next door in 1860. It was built in 1801, used as a hospital in the war of 1812. It is part of St.Andrew's Catholic Church. by Steve Manders

A huge cast iron pot and grind stone from the old mill. Sydenham lake is in the background. Sydenham had the only grist mill (for grinding grain) north of Kingston in 1836. The mill charged 1/12 of the grain as a fee to grind the farmers grain. It was operated by George W. Yarker. by Steve Manders

Iron ore was barged to Marmora from here in 1820 to 1867. It fed one of Ontario's first foundrys there. Iron imported from England and brought up the St.Lawrence River by canoe and bauteau was very expensive. This is private land. by Steve Manders

Location of the original Godfrey train station on the Kingston & Pembroke Railway, built in 1875, last used in 1960. The original post office was 150 m. south of here, and was called the Deniston P.O.. Chester Godfrey lived across the road on the right, in 1878. Highway # 38 was built in 1934 following the local township roads, and the Westport Road here was also here in 1878. That is the K&P trail just to the left of the orange truck, it uses the old K&P rail bed. by Steve Manders
