It relied on wood heat and it was expensive, and the house would not have been insulated. Water mains and sewers were hand dug, and had to go at least 1.2 m. (4 ft.) deep to get below the frost line to prevent freezing. It was slow and expensive to install. Plagues made municipal water a necessity.

Five of his 13 children were champion figure skaters in their day, winning many gold medals across North America and Europe.
