St. George's Cathedral (Anglican). It replaces an original wooden church from 1792 by the market square. It was built in 1925 -28, enlarged in 1838-40. The transepts, choir and dome date from 1894, and it received extensive damage in a fire in 1899 and needed major repairs. It became a cathedral in 1862.

Madawaska River, May 2, a week after peak spring run off. In the days of log drives, 3 ft. diameter pine logs ( a m. or more) would jam up here, a thousand other logs would quickly pile up behind it. Loggers had to untangle it by hand. Often the whole mess started running at once. There was no compensation for injuries or death. They lived on beans, salt pork, bread, no baths all winter. Forty men lived on one bunk house, with one big open fire. Visit the logging museum in the park. by Steve Manders
