Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John A. McDonald began his law practice in this building in 1835. He had practiced law for a year in Hallowell (Picton) in 1834 as an assistant. A developer wants to demolish this whole corner, but the City has refused a permit. It will remain, though there is some dispute about how much is original. This house was built in 1885 by architect W. Newlands, probably with Napanee brick which was available after 1858. The stone and brick work are almost like a wedding cake. Note the winter landscaping. by Steve Manders

Magnificient stone house. note the large porch on the left side. Built about 1845. Imagine heating it with hand cut wood 160 years ago. By 1900 there were few trees left in the area. Coal was not available before 1871. Coal gas first appeared in 1847 to light streets, but it would have taken years for piping it to here. Old Newfoundland Bullet, part of the Newfoundland Railway, it used narrow gauge tracks and had a top speed of 30 mph. The last passenger train was in 1969. Maintained by the Railway Scoiety of Newfoundland. One of only a dozen or so old steam locomotives left in the country, and this is the only narrow gauge one. by Steve Manders
